Introduction

26,000 children under the age of 5 die of hunger-related causes every day! The 30 Hour Famine attempts to alleviate the scourge of hunger, starvation, poverty, preventable disease especially among children.

The concept is simple: teenagers secure monetary sponsorship from relatives and friends in exchange for fasting from food for 30 straight hours! The money collected from such sponsorship is used to save children's lives from starvation.

When is the next 30 Hour Famine?

The next 30 Hour Famine is scheduled for February 15-16, 2009 with free overnight stay at the St. Leonard Youth Retreat Center in Avon.

The theme of the 2009 Famine is: Will Starve For Food

The Details

60 teens and young adults will engage in educational experiences, individual and group reflection, prayer and meaningful discussions, creative projects, games and, weather permitting, outdoor activities (bonfire, night hike, candle light procession, etc.)

Participants will refrain from any and all food intake, but will consume plenty of fluids, with "mandatory drink breaks" scheduled into the program. The 30 Hour Famine gratefully accepts donations of water, juices, pop, milk, coffee, etc. (no alcoholic drinks, please)

The 30 Hour Famine ends with a "Break-the-Fast" controlled meal as a group in the SLYRC dining hall. Food donations are also gratefully accepted for the "Break-the-Fast" meal at the end of the 30 Hour Famine experience.
